The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays across the country. The holidays are in observance of the 2026 Eid-el-Fitr (Sallah) celebration, marking the successful completion of the holy month of Ramadan.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on Tuesday on behalf of the Federal Government. In a statement signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Minister congratulated the Muslim Ummah for the successful completion of the fasting period, characterized by spiritual reflection and devotion.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged Muslims to continue practicing the virtues emphasized during the Ramadan period, including love, generosity, peace, and tolerance. He specifically called on all Nigerians to use this festive period to pray for the nation's continued peace, unity, and economic prosperity.

"The Federal Government remains committed to promoting national unity and peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians," the statement added. The Minister further encouraged citizens to celebrate responsibly and extend acts of kindness to the less privileged in the spirit of the season.

With the holidays falling on Thursday and Friday, Nigerians are set to enjoy a 4-day long weekend (March 19th – March 22nd). Civil servants and private sector workers are expected to resume duties on Monday, March 23, 2026.

As you prepare for the festivities, remember that security agencies, including the NSCDC, have already deployed thousands of personnel nationwide to ensure a hitch-free celebration. Stay safe and enjoy the break!
