Nigeria Mourns as 1980 AFCON Hero Henry Nwosu Dies at 62

Nigeria’s football community is in mourning following the death of former Super Eagles midfielder Henry Nwosu, a member of the historic team that won Nigeria’s first continental title at the 1980 African Cup of Nations. He died on Saturday at the age of 62 after a brief illness.

Reports indicate that the former international passed away at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment. His death was confirmed by former teammate Segun Odegbami, who described the loss as a painful moment for Nigerian football.

Nwosu rose to national prominence as a teenager when he represented Nigeria at the 1980 African Cup of Nations, hosted by Nigeria. At just 17 years old, he was the youngest player in the national squad—then known as the Green Eagles—that defeated Algeria 3–0 in the final to secure Nigeria’s first AFCON trophy.

Known for his creativity and vision in midfield, Nwosu went on to enjoy a distinguished international career, earning numerous caps for the Nigeria national football team throughout the 1980s. He also represented the country in several continental tournaments, helping the team reach the finals of later AFCON competitions.

At club level, the talented midfielder featured for several teams in Nigeria and abroad, including New Nigeria Bank F.C., ASEC Mimosas, and Racing FC Bafoussam, earning respect for his technical skills and leadership on the field.

After retiring from professional football, Nwosu remained active in the sport, working as a coach and mentor to younger players while contributing to football development in Nigeria.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the country, with many describing him as one of the pioneers who helped shape modern Nigerian football. Among those who mourned him was Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who described Nwosu’s passing as a great loss to the nation’s sporting history.

Henry Nwosu is remembered not only for his role in Nigeria’s historic 1980 AFCON victory but also for his lasting contributions to the growth of football in the country. His legacy remains firmly etched in the history of Nigerian sport.
